Did you know?... Relaxation is a habit. When you're relaxed, feeling good, in the zone... you're more likely to make thoughtful choices, understand and remember things you may be learning, and perform well with your training. You're also more likely to view mistakes as learning experiences rather than failures. And in the long run... a leaner, healthier, stronger body.
But... how do you do it?
Here's a simple way to start relaxing. FOCUS ON YOUR BREATHING... for 5 minutes. That's it. Lie down comfortably on your back, close your eyes, one hand on your belly, one hand on your chest... and focus on the belly hand moving up and down, gently, as you breathe. Breathe in, belly expands, hand goes up. Breathe out, belly lowers, hand goes down. You don't have to "think" about anything. Just focus on your breath and belly going up and down. 5 minute time out... TRY IT!
You'll probably feel a bit calmer, more focused and mentally ready. That's a win!

When you put your body in the constraints of any machine - you disrupt how the body naturally moves. You put “training wheels” on your body, completely taking away the need to create balance & work as it normally would in ‘real life.’ Smaller muscles that must fire at the exact time & stay on at a certain degree to maintain knee stability for example are no longer as important. It doesn’t matter if your foot stability is perfect or your balance coordination is correct - the track the bar moves on now dictates your balance point.❌ Take away: the squat is a movement first and an exercise second. Using the ‘training wheels’ of a smith machine changes these priorities around and should therefore not be a part of your exercise selection if at all possible.

One of the main reasons we started working with children is because it is important for us to instill the value of fitness at an early age. It is also important to make sure kids find fitness fun – if children grow up associating working out with being something enjoyable and clearly seeing the benefits to their bodies and health, then they are more likely to keep fitness as a priority throughout their lives🙆🏼🙆🏻‍♂️🙆‍♀️

So, if your kid wants to do CrossFit and the class has good trainers, that's just fine. But if your kid prefers doing cartwheels outside to lunges indoors, that's fine, too. It’s easy to get consumed with moving big weight, as many of us love the competitive nature of lifting. But if you push your body too far too often & don’t have the fundamental technique down to support the heavy lifting you’re doing ... you increase your risk of injury. It may not be tomorrow, or the next day, but we are all human.🥊

When it comes to the gym and your fitness there are steps and progressions you can take that can help in creating a more sustainable path to success. Unfortunately many of these steps are often overlooked.

You are highly motivated to achieve your goals, so naturally, you want to make that happen as fast as possible. So what happens is you start looking for shortcuts. You skip steps you deem less valuable. You jump straight to dessert without having eaten dinner.

Nope, this isn’t a flashback to a dinner conversation with mom and dad at age 7.

Just a simple core nutrition habit that will make a world of difference with regard to how you feel…eat five (5) fists of vegetables per day.

Does that seem unrealistic?

No problem… start with three (3). The aim is to get just a little bit better each and every day. Perfection isn’t the goal.

Why veggies?

Good question… Probably the closest thing we have to the fountain of youth.
Back to veggies…

You’ve got your non-starchy veggies…and you’ve got your starchy variety.

Some examples of non-starchy vegetables include… - ALL “leafy greens” (spinach / kale / romaine / etc.)
- Asparagus
- Broccoli
- Brussel Sprouts
- Celery
- Cabbage (all kinds)
- Carrots
- Cauliflower
- Cucumbers
- Mushrooms
- Onions (yellow / red)
- Peppers (red / orange / yellow / green)
- Sprouts
- Tomatoes
- Zucchini

And the cool thing(s) about non-starchy veggies…
- Low in calories
- Low in carbohydrates
- Low in sugar
- High in water
- High in fiber
- High in nutrients
- And… you can basically eat as much as you want because the calorie content is so low

Starchy veggies, on the other hand, we generally DO need to be aware of intake…as the calories can start to add up.

Doesn’t mean these are “bad” choices; quite the opposite. While starchy veggies are higher in calories, carbs, starches and sugar…they’re also high in nutrients and water content.

Some ‘go-to’ examples include… - Squash (butternut / acorn / spaghetti)
- Pumpkin
- Beets
- Potatoes
- Sweet Potatoes
- Turnips
- Rutabaga
- Peas
- Corn…which is actually a grain, but most people think of it as a veggie.

So, again… aim for five (5) fists per day…with the majority of those fists coming from the non-starchy category.

Simple habit to improve your health = EAT YOUR VEGGIES!

If you can’t lift 70% of your 1RMs cold, across the board, it means your training is not making you as healthy as it could be.
.Please don’t mistake this for a post that is minimizing warmups. You should warm up for workouts and sport, you should not need to warm up to bring in the groceries and cook dinner✖️
